How to choose a storage unit size

A useful storage estimate starts with your belongings and how often you will visit. Square footage helps you compare units, but doorways, ceiling height and the way you pack determine whether a particular space works.

Compare 5×5, 5×10 and 10×10 spaces

A 5×5 unit offers about 25 square feet of floor area. Start here when planning for boxes, seasonal items or a small collection of belongings. Lay out a five-foot square at home to see how much of the footprint your largest items use.

A 5×10 unit offers about 50 square feet. It may suit a mix of boxes and furniture, depending on dimensions and how safely the items can be stacked. Floor area alone does not establish fit: furniture still needs doorway and turning clearance.

A 10×10 unit offers about 100 square feet. Compare this footprint when planning several furniture pieces or a larger move. Room-count labels are only rough estimates: bulky furniture can need very different space from boxed items.

Measure before you reserve

Write down the width, depth and height of your largest items. Note whether furniture can be safely disassembled and which boxes cannot carry weight on top. Mark the proposed unit footprint with tape and arrange the largest pieces first.

Reserve an aisle to items you expect to retrieve. Allow room to turn and lift a box without unpacking the whole unit. Confirm interior measurements, door opening, ceiling height and any elevator clearance with the facility.
